Eileen Gu: Riding Between the Lines

If you followed the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, you probably came across a viral press conference clip. After winning two silver medals in her first two events at the Games, Chinese American freestyle skier Eileen Gu was asked whether that meant two gold medals lost. She laughed off the question, calmly reminded the room that she was already the most decorated women’s freestyle skier in Olympic history, and pointed out that people tend to forget how difficult it is just to stand on an Olympic podium — let alone do it repeatedly.

Gu left Milan-Cortina as the most decorated freestyle skier in Winter Olympic history. The applause for her was real and so was the noise underneath it. In this issue, we take a look at what she delivered, what she withheld, and why both still matter.
